H. Thomas Byron III, President


Tom Byron has been a member of the Department since 2002, and is certified as an Emergency Medical Technican (EMT) and an EMT-Instructor. In addition to serving as a volunteer EMT, and as the Department’s President since 2006, Tom provides EMS instruction to members of the Department to maintain their EMT certification. He also provides training to citizens, such as members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), who train to assist first responders in the event of a large-scale disaster.

Tom has also served as President (2002-2003) and Chief (2003-2004) of the Arlington-Falls Church Volunteer Rescue Squad, a volunteer organization affiliated with the Department. Tom has been involved in the volunteer fire and emergency medical service in Northern Virginia since 1998, serving with the Bailey’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department (Fairfax County Co. 10), as well as the Arlington Volunteer Fire Department (Co. 1), prior to joing the Falls Church Volunteer Fire Department. He has also volunteered to provide emergency medical services for athletes and others at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, as a member of the Soldier Hollow Nordic Ski Patrol; he is currently a Senior Patroller and Instructor-Trainer with the Massanutten Ski Patrol.

Tom is an attorney with the Appellate Staff of the Civil Division, United States Department of Justice. He holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees from Georgetown University, and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. He lives in Arlington with his wife Eileen and their two sons, Tom and James.
